Having recently perused HBO for any decent movies, I found this gem of the mid-90’s. A time when cable was king, the Internet was for weirdos and High Society still held it’s iron tight grip on the streets of Manhattan. The First Wives Club deals with the struggles of three women as their husbands leave them for younger women.
The fourth woman, after her husband leaves her, commits suicide, send notes to her former friends of love, and adoration. The woman, Cynthia, was left by her husband whom she made rich and powerful by her connections, and he married his much younger, prettier mistress.
Meeting at Cynthia’s funeral, the three remaining women, Brenda (Bette Midler), Annie (Diane Keaton), and Elise (Goldie Hawn) concoct a scheme for revenge with the aide of Annie’s lesbian daughter Chris (Jen Dundas), and New York socialite, as well as a first, second, third and fourth wife, Gunilla Garson Goldberg (Dame Maggie Smith).
The end result is something far off from what is planned, but still a touching, and indeed, beautiful thing. Not only does this film include the debauchery of the nineties and the growing unrest between the sexes before feminism became mainstream, but it also has a kick-ass song-and-dance number, and is indeed a riot.
Empowering to women everywhere, The First Wives Club is a film worth viewing, assuming you can find it.

I don’t tell you what to say
I don’t tell you what to do
So just let me be myself
That’s all I ask of you

I’m young and I love to be young
I’m free and I love to be free
To live my life the way I want
To say and do whatever I please
